Nervous Nellie

By Administrator | January 16, 2006

Today is the day I plan to start my “training” regimen and I’m going to run my first race on September 30, 2006. I’ve chosen the X-Terra 5K (3.107 miles) Scramble at Lake Tahoe as my inaugural competition: https://www.xterraplanet.com/races/registration/index.cfm?race_id=407&CFID=946945&CFTOKEN=86098281 and I’ve just registered. Now I’m nervous!

At this time, I’m weighing in at 211.5 pounds and my immediate goal is to get myself below the 200 mark, no matter how long that takes. In the past, I’ve always set unrealistic time frames for my weight loss, so I’m not going to pressure myself with a limit. I will eat better and exercise more and see how long it takes; I’ve lost weight in the past and know I can do so again. My true goal these days is just to be healthy.

My first training goal will be a mile. Since I haven’t exercised regularly for a few months, I’m going to start by walking that mile on the track at the local middle school, and I’ll increase the walking distance to three miles over the next month. I will start jogging on February 15th with a goal of finishing one complete lap without walking. Once the weather warms up a bit, I’ll start hiking the nearby hills to work up my leg muscles and acclimate my lungs to changing altitudes. By Memorial Day weekend, I hope to be ready to head up to Lake Tahoe to start jogging at the altitude where the competition will take place. That will give me four months to get ready for the race.

I think this all sounds doable and I’m hoping to at least finish the race without feeling too bad about myself.

Distance Walked: 1.68 Miles
