Fire, Fire, Everywhere

The Northern Nevada fire season has started with a vengeance. Two days ago, a series of dry lightning strikes set off numerous blazes throughout the northern portion of the state. The largest fire is at present burning around the Elko area with probably more than 60,000 acres burned by now. Fires are also burning north of Reno, in Empire, Palomino Valley/Spanish Springs, and along the California border near Susanville; and in Moundhouse, just east of Carson City. A total of eight fires appear to be burning across the northern portion of the state and our governor has declared a state of emergency. A federal type one team has been called in to coordinate firefighting efforts and the base of operations (or incident command center) has been set up at Carson High School.
The Linehan Fire in Moundhouse is the closest to my home and a pall of smoke hung over Carson City yesterday morning that reminded me of the Waterfall Fire of two years ago. The Waterfall was much closer to my home, having started just a few blocks west, so I feel bad for anyone who is within the worst of the smoke from this fire.
Meteorologists are predicting thunderstorms for the next three days. Hopefully, we will have more rain than lightning so Mother Nature can help put out some of the blazes before things get much worse.
