A Woman On The Edge

Closing In

By Administrator | August 7, 2006

The 5k is getting close, only seven weeks now, and I don’t feel I’m nearly ready for the challenge. My hope is that I finish in less than an hour, even if I have to walk partway, and not embarrass myself too much. I’m thinking I’ll probably register for next year’s race as soon as I’m able and I’ll continue training from where I am when I complete this one.

The start list for the scramble is still five people (myself included) with one other person in my age category…another woman. We’ve got two men and three women at the moment; the men are both in the 20-29 range and the third woman is within the 30-39 age group. I’m pretty sure I’ll probably place dead last.

Results posted for a 5k run in Alabama back in June show the finish times to be between 20:11 and 38:54. The first place finisher was a 10-year-old and the oldest person listed finished third with a respectable 21:07. I’m sure I won’t be able to come close to that time. Not only am I not in great shape, but the X-Terra Tahoe 5k is up at a higher elevation than many of the other races. My only hope is that I have a slight advantage because I normally live at a higher elevation than the other competitors in my race who come mostly from California (there is one Reno resident too).

I guess I shouldn’t worry too much. The point is to have fun and finish - no matter how slow my time.
