The World Now

This past election season was both exciting and disappointing for me. I took the next step in the process and actually ran for office, but only came in a respectable third in the primary, so I was out of the running before the race got interesting. The bigger disappointment to me was the fact that I backed one of the two remaining candidates in my race (the one I felt was really the most qualified) and he was, unfortunately, defeated. Not only that, most of the other candidates I wanted to win this time around also lost to the ones that I felt were much less qualified despite their name recognition. In fact, many of their names were memorable because of the infamous things they’d done.
We are a fortunate nation to have the ability to choose the people who govern us. Unfortunately, we’ve become jaded with our process and tend not to participate the way we should. How many times have you walked into the local polling place without any information on the people and issues you’re voting for? How often have you chosen not to vote at all?
The mid-term elections are done and another presidential race will be starting very soon. Think about the problems facing our country right now and take the time to really research the issues and the candidates before making your voice heard in the next election. If you haven’t voted in awhile (or have never voted) then get out there and make sure your voice is heard. My advice is to ignore all the negative campaign ads and to do a little research on your own; this is much easier to do with the advent of the internet. Start this process before we get into the next election cycle so you can more easily find unbiased information on the candidates. For people already holding a political office, checking out their prior voting history is a good place to start. If you’re more of a fan of sports than politics, approach the process as you would check out a favored player, and continue on from there.
We are a fortunate nation to be allowed to participate in our process this way. Unfortunately, the world now has been created by those of us who have thrown away our rights in one way or another; either by not doing the proper research and voting only for those people with names we recognize or for not voting at all. This country is based on majority rule and the majority of us aren’t participating the way we should.
Consider that something to think about during the lull between elections - and get try to get involved in making a positive change in our world in two years.
