Turkey Trot
By Administrator | November 23, 2006
My aerobic exercise today will consist of the walk around the kitchen and the trek to the Thanksgiving table. Weight-lifting will come in the form of heaving the fifteen pound bird into the oven and out again, carrying the bird-laden tray to the table, and heaving huge trash bags out this evening.
I’ve always considered Thanksgiving to be a “no-exercise/no-guilt” zone. When I was growing up, my extended family made it clear that they didn’t expect anyone to do much of anything but cook and eat on this most hallowed of holidays. That’s the reason for my fond memories of lying around watching the parade, playing board games with my cousins, and eating myself sick. I associate Thanksgiving with an absence of guilt about anything that has to do with good health habits.
This year, I have a plan to start creating new traditions and memories. Once that bird is stripped down and the trash has been cleared…I’m going out for an evening stroll. The night will be cold, the air clear and fresh, and we won’t quite yet be completely inundated with the signs of the approaching Christmas holiday. This evening will be my celebration of autumn and the new beginning of my exercise program as I prepare myself for that 5k next year.
I would like to be thankful for my new-found good health in twelve months!
