Medical Advice

Recent blood tests indicated that my LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides are elevated. She has told me in the past that I’m on the verge of diabetes and that I need to lower these numbers in order to prevent myself from having to take more medication for the rest of my life even as she prescribed something to lower these levels. My husband suggested that I ask whether I might be able to try an alternative approach and the suggestion was the same: take 1000mg of slow-release niacin daily and lose weight through a “no white” diet (without flour and sugar). She suggested South Beach, but I’d already planned to get started on the Dr. Gott No Flour, No Sugar diet, so I’m going to go ahead with that. The outcome should be the same, I think.
This weekend I’m going to evaluate what we’ve got in our kitchen and throw out some old stuff that’s been in the cupboard for quite some time. I’ve got to keep “normal” food in the house for the rest of the family, but I’m going to start having my heart-healthy oatmeal and fruit for breakfast, plus I’ll figure out more healthful options for snacks, lunch, and dinner that don’t include things like the cereal, bread, and pasta that have become the staples of our diet. I had good luck with a dinner of microwaved chicken breasts and vegetables in the past and I’ve just got to figure out other foods that I can use to augment that meal. Eating the same thing day after day isn’t just boring, it’s not very healthy, so I’ve got to find alternatives.
I’ve been realizing just how tough this is going to be because the stores are full of processed foods that include a lot of flour and sugar. I’m really going to have to start cooking from scratch again.
Hopefully, all this will help me regain some of the health I’ve lost to my own self-neglect over the years. I can’t do anything about the genetic aspects of my problems, but that doesn’t mean I can’t be a healthier person. I should still be young enough to be able to enjoy the next forty or so years of my life.
