The End?
By Administrator | December 29, 2006
News reports indicate that Saddam Hussein is scheduled to be put to death at any moment now. While I feel he should be punished for what he did, I don’t know if executing him will accomplish anything; he’ll more than likely become another martyr for whom blood will be shed. I would prefer that he be incarcerated somewhere so he could really think about the crimes of which he’s been accused.
I once was very pro-death penalty. Now I’m somewhat ambivalent to the idea. I get irritated when convicted killers receive numerous appeals of their sentence, since their victims had no chance to appeal their death, but I can’t really say that carrying out the ultimate penalty in most cases really accomplishes much of anything. The one time I still feel the death penalty should be enacted is in the case of serial killers.
And in the time I’ve been writing this post, Saddam Hussein has been executed. Taking a human life is so easy because we’re fragile creatures. Do you feel justice has been served? I certainly don’t.
We need to keep watch on the events unfolding in the Middle East in the wake of this execution. Let’s see just how much good came from the death of a man who has already caused so much pain and suffering for so many people.
