Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig!
By Administrator | March 17, 2007
That’s the Gaelic for “Happy St. Patrick’s Day” for non-speakers. Despite the fact that I’m probably 3/4 Irish (my mother was born and raised in Dublin and I’ve heard that I may also have Irish on my father’s side of the family), I know very little Gaelic and I probably couldn’t correctly pronounce the words if I tried. My hope is to someday learn how to speak my “native tongues” of Irish and Portuguese - and as many other languages as I can pick up.
March 17th is the traditional feast day of St. Patrick and is the anniversary of his death in the fifth century; the holiday has been celebrated for hundreds of years with attendance at mass in the morning and a non-Lenten feast of Irish bacon and cabbage in the afternoon. Here’s an interesting article at History.com about the holiday in case you’d like to know more.
