Middle daughter and I just got home from seeing the newest Pirates movie. This one was better than the second, but not as good as the first, and the special effects toward the end were well worth the price of admission. Keith Richards played the father of Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow - again worth the price of admission. Unfortunately, I can’t talk about my favorite parts of the movie without giving away too much of the story so I’ll leave it at that.

In other entertainment-related news, yesterday marked the 30th anniversary of the release of that classic of science fiction: Star Wars. Thirty years is an incredible amount of time to have passed in what seems to have been the blink of an eye. In May of 1977, I was 13 years old and about to graduate 8th grade. My dad wanted to see this new movie that I thought looked incredibly dumb and we fought; as usual, he won and I went. We saw the movie at the Briggsmore Theater in Modesto, California (coincidentally the former stomping ground of George Lucas and the setting for his movie American Graffitti). Seeing this movie was as life-changing for me as for many other kids of my generation and I’m glad I was around for the excitement. The release of the first movie of Lucas’ second Star Wars (prequel) trilogy wasn’t nearly as much fun as the first movie in that summer of 1977.

Now I’m looking forward to the July release of the next movie in the Harry Potter series: Order of the Phoenix. I only hope the movie lives up to the excitement I’ve felt when I’ve seen the trailers…
