This New Week

Hopefully, this week will start out better than last week ended (if you count Sunday as last week). The poor folks in the South Lake Tahoe area are facing an inferno, now being called “The Angora Fire,” that has already claimed thousands of acres of timber and hundreds of homes. When I was watching the evening news yesterday, the local station even mentioned that South Lake Tahoe High School might be threatened. Easterly winds have blown ash and smoke as far as Fallon - and the smoke plume was apparently visible from Lassen County, California. This is a monster of a fire and my best wishes go out to everyone who is being affected. No one has yet been injured and lets hope the situation stays that way.
On a lighter note, two of my daughters and I saw Evan Almighty yesterday afternoon. All the reviews I’d read beforehand were negative so I wasn’t expecting much, but the movie actually turned out to be very cute. This is good family fare (something you can’t say very often) and many small children filled the audience. Of course, the story had a good moral and was somewhat “Biblical” without being preachy. Morgan Freeman and Steve Carell have a great rapport…and I’m afraid John Goodman may be finding himself typecast these days because he once again played a bad guy that I wouldn’t want to meet in a dark alley. I recommend this movie to anyone who might enjoy something with very little violence, no foul language, and cute kids and animals.
So why did I use one entry for these two items? The reason is that I’ll forever think of fire when I see Evan Almighty because we came out of the theater to find the sky to the south of us filled with ugly smoke from the Angora Fire though they’d been completely blue when we went in. I felt a bit like I’d walked straight into hell, though not as much as I did several years ago when the Waterfall Fire was raging in the canyon due west of our house.
