Gold-Plated Globes?

By Administrator | January 8, 2008

The Golden Globes have fallen victim to the continuing writer’s strike. This year’s show has been cut down to a one-hour news conference instead of the normal multi-hour dinner gala. Who’s planning to watch?

Certainly not me. As a struggling writer wanna-be, I am behind the writers 110%. The media moguls need to get a grip on reality and realize that people need to make a living wage, which most writers aren’t doing at the moment. They also have a few “new media” distribution issues to iron out so the writers get their fair share of that income. After all, studio heads and producers earnings are based on projects that emerged from the fertile minds of a writer somewhere. There are some writer/director or writer/producer combinations, but I’ve never really heard of a writer/studio head.

I’m not too unhappy about the possibility of losing a few of the too-numerous award shows since I normally only watch the Oscars - and lately even that has been iffy. I can say for sure that I’m avoiding the Gold-Plated Globes because I’m not interested enough to care and because I’m supporting the writers. What does make me unhappy is the fact that many writers are losing out on their already-slim income, along with the other industry support staff who aren’t able to work at the moment. I’m also upset that we’re going to lose out on episodes of the two good TV shows left to watch these days: Supernatural and Pushing Daisies.

Much more is at stake here than the loss of a few award shows. Wake up studio moguls…you need the writers more than they need you. Plus, the actors contracts are coming up for review later this year and you just might want this first strike resolved before facing the next one.
